Zandie Gumede (née Khumalo) has put telenovelas and soapies on blast for what she called exploitation.
She took to her Instagram timeline recently and wrote a lengthy post sharing her experience of what happened when she was asked to appear on a show and how shocked she was at the amount of money they wanted to pay her.
“South African film industry needs a serious look into. I'm talking specifically about these soapies, telenovelas and series za daily/weekly. So I got a call from one of them weeks ago and [they] said they had a role for me and I was like I'm not an actress but I'm willing to listen to them Hhaybo Zihlobo . When we got to discuss the numbers I almost fainted as to what they pay per call. I have a lot of friends who are actors and I don't wanna look down on anyone's job but kune serious exploitation eyenzeka kwa acting.
“The money they offered per call doesn't even cover my hospitality rider at a gig ... guys I was shocked, obviously rates vary from lead actor, supporting actor, call actor, extra and all that but ngeke guys ngeke iphele i depression kubantu bakithi phela these shows eza ne fame e serious and I fame iza nama expectations kubantu,” she wrote.

In 2018, the SA Guild of Actors led by Jack Devnarain and Florence Masebe pleaded their case in a public hearing in Cape Town.
Jack announced the history-making moment for South African actors on Twitter at the time.
“I will be with SAGA in parliament on Thursday September 13 motivating for the adoption of the Performers Protection Amendment Bill. This bill will allow South African actors to claim a residual income for their work on an audiovisual medium,” he said then.
Taking to her X timeline recently Florence had a throwback to the moment they appeared in parliament.
“This popped up in my memories and I laughed so hard at myself for having believed that it would yield positive results. I know now that it won't happen and it's not because we didn't try. I just don't have the energy to fight further. Let those with might carry on the fight,” she wrote.
