During their interview, Maphorisa spoke of his venture into the genre in about 2018 studying the sound by attending gigs by Kabza and other artists who were playing with it at the time, and today plays at amapiano from Thursday to Monday.
Though Maphorisa has been labelled a gatekeeper in the music industry, he's continued to make strides.
Previously defending himself against naysayers, Maphorisa tweeted that no-one owned the amapiano genre.
“I see you don't get it. No-one owns amapiano. Anyone can do it and win. Good example, look at Uncle Waffles. One trending Adiwele video, the rest was history. She did it alone. And look at Costa Titch. He is doing it alone and winning. Stop saying I am a gatekeeper,” he wrote.

DJ Maphorisa received a warm welcome when having his first interview on Metro FM.
Tbo Touch and his The Touch Down team pulled out all the stops, surprising the producer and DJ with 40 voices from the Singers of God Music Academy to sing his hit song featuring Kabza De Small and Ami Faku, Asibe Happy.
